Hitachi has unveiled what they are claiming to be the highest performance, most power efficient 10k Hard Drive for Tier 1 Enterprise Networked Storage Arrays, Blades and Other Rack-mounted Servers, the Ultrastar C10K900 2.5-inch Enterprise Hard Drive. The company just announced that they have started shipping the device which supposedly leads the industry with 18 percent faster sequential and up to 17 percent faster random performance than the nearest competitor. Features of the Ultrastar C10K900 includes a 64MB cache buffer to optimize the read/write response time, a high-performance SAS 6Gb/s interface, there are average seek times as low as 3.8 milliseconds, and its fast rotational speed reduces average latency time to below 3.0 milliseconds thus enabling the user to access data more quickly.
The Hitachi Ultrastar C10K900 2.5-inch Enterprise Hard Drive Family is available in the storage capacities of 900GB, 600GB, 450GB and 300GB with the 900GB model being the industry’s highest 10K capacity point. Each drives also utilizes Hitachi’s power management technology which enables the drives to use up to 28 percent power than competing drives. The drives also features a Bulk Data Encryption option for hard drive-level data security and were designed to the Trusted Computing Group’s Enterprise A Security Subsystem Class encryption specification. All the drives will be available in high volume in Q1 of 2012.
